There is a sliver of time in the early LA morning when the bright orange glow of sunlight splashes in through our front Spanish windows hitting everything in its path including whatever is on our kitchen table. Today it’s a bowl of pomegranates and ripe green walnuts on the table and the sunlight has transformed it somehow into this perfect, almost suspended, moment in time. It’s hard to put into words why something so simple can illicit such a visceral reaction. It’s not exclusive. It’s a feeling that was born into each one of us, it’s in our nature, whether we’re aware of it or not. It’s an instant reminder that beauty both inside the home and in the food we eat are inherently connected. Your home, your space, has the incredible ability to heal in the same way food can heal…
The great philosopher Mircea Eliade coined the term hierophany, which is a word designating an awareness of the sacred, transforming the objects through which it works. Similar to how any religious relic can be made sacred, hierophany means that anything under the cosmos can be made sacred. A walk through the forest, a long meal with friends under dripping candle light and good music, a morning coffee ritual, or the way plants are placed in the home - these are all what I consider to be hierophany. It’s whatever makes us feel good on the daily, it’s the rituals we create through food and how we design our space, and what we surround ourselves with. It’s how we curate our palate and how we curate our home that dictates what we value. When we place an importance on everyday things like the food we eat or the objects in our home we are deliberately and consciously making a decision to better ourselves and our lives. I hope you’ll dig deep into this idea with us and join us along this journey.
